*”You Can Have Thousands of Followers and Still Feel Invisible”: Soniya Bansal on Loneliness in Modern Times*

Actress Soniya Bansal believes that in today’s fast-paced digital world, loneliness is not about being physically alone but about lacking genuine emotional connections.
Reflecting on the growing loneliness epidemic, Soniya says that the last time someone genuinely asked her, “How are you?” and patiently waited for an honest answer was during a meaningful conversation with a close friend. “Those moments are rare today because most people ask out of habit, not necessarily because they are ready to listen. The people who stay and hear your real answer are the ones you should cherish,” she says.Talking about why loneliness has become so common despite people being more connected than ever, Soniya feels that the issue lies in the quality of conversations rather than the quantity of relationships. “I don’t think people are lonely because they have fewer relationships. I think they are lonely because they have fewer meaningful conversations. We share updates every day, but very few of us share what we are truly feeling.”

The actress also believes that social media has created an illusion of connection. “Social media has definitely made us more visible to each other, but not always more connected. We know what people are eating, where they are travelling, and what they are posting, but we may not know what they are going through emotionally.”

According to Soniya, finding genuine connections has become more difficult than finding people. “Today, meeting people is easy. Finding your people—the ones who understand you without judgment—is much harder. Real connections require time, patience, and vulnerability.”

She points out that loneliness can exist even in the middle of a crowded social circle. “Someone can have hundreds of contacts saved on their phone and still feel completely alone. Emotional security doesn’t come from numbers; it comes from trust and understanding.”

When asked how many people she could message versus how many she could truly rely on during difficult times, Soniya offers a thoughtful perspective. “Most of us can message dozens or even hundreds of people instantly, but when life becomes challenging, only a handful remain available for a real conversation.
Those few people are what truly matter.”

The actress feels that instant messaging has, in many ways, replaced deeper conversations. “We have become comfortable with quick replies, emojis, and reactions. While technology makes communication easier, meaningful conversations require presence, empathy, and time—things that can’t always be conveyed through a few words on a screen.”

Asked about one message she would love to receive today, Soniya shares a simple yet powerful thought. “I would love someone to send a message saying, ‘Take your time, I’m here for you, and you don’t have to pretend to be okay.’ Sometimes knowing that someone genuinely cares can make all the difference.”
