Mohammed Nagaman Lateef: “Parents should support their children’s choices, not pressure them into marriage”

The Pune murder case has sparked outrage across the country, raising questions about relationships, family pressure, consent, and emotional well-being. Reacting to the shocking incident, Indian media entrepreneur and entertainment executive Mohammed Nagaman Lateef, who serves as Talent Head at Balaji Telefilms, shared his thoughts, calling the case heartbreaking while urging families and couples to prioritise honest communication and informed decisions before marriage.

Speaking about his first reaction, Mohammed Nagaman Lateef said, “My first thought was, how can a girl do this to a guy who loved her the most? It is heartbreaking to even imagine. A young life has been lost, and many other lives have been destroyed because of one terrible decision. It is a tragedy for everyone involved.”

Addressing the ongoing debate around consent and family pressure in relationships, he stressed that no one should be forced into marriage. “Parents should never pressure their daughters to marry someone they don’t want to marry. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, and people should have the freedom to choose a partner who truly makes them happy. A relationship built under pressure is never healthy.”

Lateef also highlighted the importance of open communication within families. “Yes, open communication is extremely important. When families create a space where children can speak honestly without fear of being judged, many problems can be resolved before they become serious. Good communication makes life much easier for everyone.”
Sharing his perspective on emotional well-being and healthy relationships, he said people should make informed decisions instead of rushing into marriage. “My advice is simple. Live happily the way you want to live. Before getting married, understand the other person’s habits, behaviour, and values. I would even say that couples should spend enough time together and truly know each other before making such an important decision. Knowing someone well helps build a stronger relationship.”

He also pointed out that while the case has received widespread attention because the accused is a woman, violence against women continues to be a major concern. “This case has spread everywhere because a girl has allegedly committed the crime. But every day we also hear about so many rape cases involving women, and those conversations should continue with the same seriousness. Every crime deserves attention and justice, regardless of who the accused is.”

Reacting to the accused’s father stating that his daughter deserves the harshest punishment if she is found guilty, Mohammed Nagaman Lateef said the statement reflects the difficult balance between justice and a parent’s unconditional love. He said, “Justice should always come before personal relationships. If she is found guilty, the law must do its job. But at the end of the day, he is still her father, and I believe he must be heartbroken. No parent would ever want to see their child involved in something like this. While justice must prevail, the emotional pain he and the family must be going through is unimaginable.”
