Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan: Srishti Jain on the show’s strong stand against dowry; “It’s a practice that needs to end”

Zee TV’s Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan, starring Amandeep Sidhu (Sneha) and Sheizaan Khan (Siddhu), is currently showcasing one of its most powerful and socially relevant tracks, taking a strong stand against the deeply rooted and unethical practice of dowry. Through its ongoing narrative, the show highlights how, despite emotional pressure, a bride and her family must never compromise on their dignity. The upcoming episode will show how Ganga Mai (Shubhangi Latkar) finally says no to Sahana’s mother-in-law, Kaushalya (Gunabi Maan), and her dowry demands, sending out a powerful message about self-respect and resilience. In the same regard, Srishti Jain, who plays the character of Sahana and is also set to get married in real life soon, shares her perspective on this social stigma.

Srishti Jain shares, “I am happy that our show is taking a strong stand against dowry and giving out a powerful message to the audience about how every parent and bride should be strong and confident enough not to bow down to such evil practices. Also, now that I’m set to get married to the love of my life, I can confirm that our families, close ones, and friends do not believe in the concept of dowry. More so, education plays a very vital role, it gives you the awareness to not follow something just because it is an old custom, but to understand the gravity of the concept being completely wrong and realize that it is a punishable offence in our country. I mean, that is something to think about.”

She further shares, “I personally have always advocated for equality between genders, especially in spaces of cultural and religious constructs, where over a period of time women have been made to seem like some kind of liability, as if we aren’t capable enough as men. Sure, not physically, but physiologically we are the same, and women tend to be better in a lot of fields compared to men. So for me, this whole concept makes no sense. Honestly, I know so many men and boys that are far more of a liability than most women will ever be.”

Now that Ganga Mai has finally taken a stand and clearly told Sahana’s mother-in-law that she will not give in to her demands, it will be interesting to see how Sahana’s mother-in-law reacts to this huge setback and whether she will make Sahana’s life even more difficult.
