‘Bhabhi Ka Rishta Respect Aur Maryada Se Juda Hai’: Aamrapali Dubey

Bigg Boss 20 has barely completed its first few days, but the drama inside the house has already begun. The latest episode saw a conversation between Bhojpuri actress Aamrapali Dubey and television actress Maahi Vij turn into a discussion about the word ‘Bhabhi’ and the cultural sentiments attached to it.

What stood out about Aamrapali’s reaction was that she did not appear to be picking a fight with Maahi for the sake of an argument. Instead, she tried to explain why the repeated use of the term in that particular context could be misunderstood by people associated with the Bhojpuri industry and her audience.

The conversation began while Aamrapali was getting dressed in a saree. She indicated that Qazi Touqeer should leave the area, following which Maahi made a light-hearted remark about Qazi wanting to see his ‘Bhabhi’ getting ready. Later, the joke resurfaced in the kitchen, with Maahi continuing to address Aamrapali as ‘Bhabhi’. Reports from the episode also noted that Aamrapali responded with her own witty comeback, showing that she was not against light-hearted banter itself.

However, Aamrapali eventually chose to explain where she was coming from. For her, the issue was not about taking offence at being called ‘Bhabhi’, but about how the joke could be perceived when connected to Bhojpuri culture. She pointed out that the relationship of a ‘Bhabhi’ carries a certain respect in the culture she represents.

Aamrapali’s concern also came from the fact that Bhojpuri cinema and its audience are an integral part of her professional identity. She made it clear that the Bhojpuri industry is not merely a workplace for her but is connected to her livelihood, identity and years of work. She also spoke about her emotional connection with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand and why she becomes protective when she feels that their culture could be misunderstood.

Interestingly, the conversation did not end with Aamrapali attacking Maahi. Maahi explained that she had no intention of mocking Bhojpuri culture and said that she understands the respect associated with the term ‘Bhabhi’. Aamrapali too clarified her position, even addressing the audience and expressing love and respect for ‘Bhabhis’ and ‘Bhaujis’. She later apologised to her fans for any misunderstanding.

This is perhaps what makes Aamrapali’s stand noteworthy. In a reality show where even a small comment can quickly turn into a major fight, she chose to put across why something had bothered her instead of simply brushing it aside. At the same time, she made it clear that her objection was rooted in sensitivity towards her culture and audience rather than personal animosity towards Maahi.

Aamrapali, who has so far shown a mix of fun, warmth and a strong personality inside the Bigg Boss house, once again revealed another side of herself. Her response showed that while she can take a joke, she is equally vocal when it comes to something she feels represents her roots.

With the season only getting started, Aamrapali’s strong personality is already becoming one of the talking points inside the house. Whether it is her humorous side, her emotional connect with Bhojpuri culture or her willingness to speak her mind, the actress is certainly making her presence felt.

Bigg Boss 20 streams every day at 9 PM on JioHotstar and airs at 10:30 PM on Colors TV.
