Audiences don’t care about perfection, they care about truth: Angad Hasija on what makes great acting

After spending years in front of the camera, Tumm Se Tumm Tak actor Angad Hasija says his biggest lesson hasn’t been about hitting marks or delivering dialogues perfectly. Instead, he’s realised that authenticity, not perfection, is what truly connects with audiences.

Looking back at the beginning of his career, Angad admits he was obsessed with looking perfect on screen. “When I first started, I was terrified of looking bad on camera. I was way too focused on my hair, my clothes, and looking like a ‘hero,'” he said.

That changed once he started taking on emotionally layered characters. “Playing raw, emotionally messy characters forced me to completely smash that insecurity. I had to learn to cry ugly, let my guard down, and not care what I looked like,” he said.

“Losing that fear was the most liberating thing ever. It taught me that audiences don’t care about perfection, they care about truth,” he added.

His understanding of acting has also evolved significantly over the years. “When I was new, I thought good acting meant delivering lines perfectly, looking sharp, and nailing every single cue,” he said.

Experience has completely changed that perspective. “Now, I think completely differently. Today, I feel the best acting happens in the quiet moments—in the silences and the way a character looks at someone,” he said.

For him, acting is no longer about trying to impress people. “It’s not about trying to act. It’s just about being present,” he said.

Ultimately, he believes the finest performances are the ones where the actor disappears completely. “A performance is beautiful when the actor completely fades away and you only see a real person,” he said.
